Research Overview

Marcela Cosarinsky investigates on Soil Micromorphology, with special reference to the effects of insect activity on soils, in particular ants and termites. It is a branch of the Edaphology that studies soils and sediments at a microscope scale. It employs undisturbed, oriented samples in which the original components and their geometrical relationships can be observed, described and interpreted. Micromorphology offers a unique mechanism for studying the interaction between soil animals and soil structure, being a very helpful tool for soil ecologists and ichnologists.

About Marcela Cosarinsky

In 2003, she received a Ph.D. in Entomology from the University of Buenos Aires in Argentina. Parallely, she completed her academic preparation with post-graduate courses on Edaphology and Soil Micromorphology in the University of La Plata (Argentina). Since 1998 she takes part in research projects on continental ichnology in the Laboratory of Ichnology of the Museo Argentino de Ciencias Naturales, Buenos Aires. In addition, she participated in projects on behavioral ecology of social insects carried out by the Institute of Behavioral Physiology and Sociobiology of the University of Würzburg, Germany.
